Anything better than college football?

It doesn't get much better than NCAA Division 1 football. Regardless of who is playing the games I am able to watch and be entertained. I can't say the same for other leagues or sports, college or professional. The upsets are more exciting, the players are more into it, and it's usual pretty disciplined compared to the NFL.

Basketball is by far my favorite sport, but if I could only watch one sport I would choose college football. It's just far more exciting than anything else. The upsets are frequent and there's always an underdog to root for. That, and the preseason favorites rarely finish where they are, "supposed to". It can't get much better than college football.

Do you agree?

Sports giants

People usually say its good for the sport when the Yankees, Lakers, Celtics, Cowboys etc make the playoffs. I however think its better when teams like the Baltimore Orioles get in. Watching the same team win ever year is only fun for that city not the other fans of the sport. I'm hoping that Oakland and Baltimore make the playoffs. Putting exposure on there city and teams and adding more fans to their teams. There are enough Yankee and Red Sox fans out there. Let's get some fresh teams in there.

Do the rangers have an ace for the playoffs?

Do the rangers have an ace for the playoffs?

I don't think so, but they lacked an ace in 2011 and were in position to win. I'm not sure that is going to be the down fall of the team. Sure it would be nice to have an ace but this staff is very deep from 1-5 and has a solid bullpen to boot.

How confident are you in the rangers rotation?

Wide Open West

Over the last decade only the Spurs, Lakers, and Mavericks were able to win the Western Conference. The way the conference looks now there is a legitimate shot for all 8 teams to win the West. The question marks are Utah, Denver and the LA Clippers. These teams are young and inexperienced and lack a legitimate guy that can take over a game.

The Lakers have the best chance to come out of the west. They have Kobe Bryant, no need to elaborate. Andrew Bynum is the best offensive center in the league and took a giant step forward on defense in game one versus Denver with 10 blocks. They filled there glaring hole by adding a nice point guard in Ramon Sessions. With there interior game to go along with Kobe Bryant's will to win this team is very dangerous, but like other teams in the West they just aren't flat out dominate.

The Thunder have been everyone's favorite to emerge from the West going in to the playoffs, but after two games against Dallas they are showing that they are far from the run away favorite. They rely to heavily on the Jump Shot, and lack the depth of a championship bench. The main question is the trio of Durant, Westbrook, and Harden good enough to carry that weak bench all the way?

The Spurs have the best coach in the league now that Phil Jackson is retired and he is able to get more out of less than any coach around. Tony Parker has been great this year, but I doubt he alone is enough to carry a team. Tim Duncan is not the player he was on the past championship teams, but they aren't relying on him anymore. They have a very deep team, but they rely heavily on a few young players. Are those kids going to be able to rise to the occasion when they match up with a veteran team in round 2?

The defending champion Mavericks have a lot of veteran players that are playoff tested. The questions surrounding their age was based off how rapid the schedule was compressed. This team is old and needs rest and will get enough between games in these playoffs. Dirk Nowitzki is the key as he can score on and over anyone thrown at him. Execution during the closing minutes has plagued them all season. Will they correct it in the playoffs before it is to late?

The Memphis Grizzlies have a very nice team. They probably are not championship caliber yet, but they have some pieces that can lead to some playoff success. They have a center in Marc Gasol that most teams excluding the Lakers cannot match up with. Several good wing players in Gay, Mayo, and Allen. A nice point guard in Mike Connely and two of the ultimate X factors in Zach Randolph and Gilbert Arenas. This is a team to watch out for, but they are most likely a couple of bench pieces away from a championship. The starting line up is talented, but they lack the depth to sustain a long run.

In years past it is hard to remember the playoffs this wide open, whether it is lack over talent on the top teams or just overall talent across the league it is going to be one of the most exciting playoffs in recent memory. Don't be surprised when a team steps up and shocks everyone in rout to a championship. As Kevin Garnett said, "Anything is possible".

Terrible Playoff Luck in OKC

After two games, anyone that has a clue can tell you that the Oklahoma City Thunder are very fortunate to be up 2 games to none on the Dallas Mavericks. Failed attempts to hold leads by the Mavs lead to both Thunder wins of 1 and 3 points.

Execution in the closing minutes was very ineffective. In game 2 the Mavs were plagued by a bad foul by Jason Terry with 2 seconds left on the shot clock which lead to two Kevin Durant free throws. The Thunder didn't make a basket in the last few minutes of the game; only able to put points on the board from the free throw line. Dirk Nowitzki missed a wide open three pointer to ice the game, and the had one rattle out that would have game them the lead with 24 seconds to go.

The Mavericks should feel as good as one could feel after losing the first two games of a seven game series. The Thunder rely so much on the Jump shot that you wonder if they can sustain any type of playoff run. As seen in the first two games where they are on fire, and then go ice cold. Ridiculous ups and downs.  Yes, basketball is a game of runs, but a team that relies heavily on the jump shot it is tough for them to win a series. Russel Westbrook, Kevin Durant and James Harden are able to get to the rim, but they would rather shoot Jumpers. Once you get into the Thunder bench they don't have good depth, and they don't have guys that can create there own shot.

The Mavs need to do a better job of capitalizing when Durant and Westbrook go to the bench. They throw out a second unit of Harden, Fisher, Cook, Collison, and Ibaka or Perkins usally. From that group there is one good NBA player, James Harden. The depth of the Maverick team should either catch up, or pull ahead during these stretches.

Dallas also has done an awful job at the end of games offensively. They try to get to cute at times and outsmart the other team, but it is really simple. When you have one of the two best closers in the game in Dirk Nowitzki you make sure he gets a touch every time down. He doesn't have to shoot every possession but he does need to put pressure on the defense and force them to double team him, and if they don't double, punish them. Isolating Vince Carter hasn't been a good move since 2006 and yes he is a good player and good shooter he isn't who you throw the ball to on consecutive possessions when you have a chance to put the game away with 3 minutes or less. The two man game with Dirk and Jet. with Kidd and Carter spotted up and either Marion or a center to rebound is the most effective way to go. (Watch 2011 playoffs and Finals).

Despite being down 0-2 the Mavs are going home to play games 3 and 4. They will surely make some adjustments as will the Thunder, but now this series isn't about how much more talented the Thunder are. It has become the best match up of the NBA Playoffs first round. Mavs need to get back to the basics and lean on number 41 and let him bring it home like he has in years past.

2012 First Round NBA Playoff Picks

I forgot to post my NBA Playoff picks here yesterday sorry I'm a little late. I'm not going to change my mind based on the few games that have been played today.

In the east:

Chicago over Philadelphia. Obviously with Derek Rose this would have been completely different, but I still like Chicago to prevail despite Rose's ACL tear.

Miami over New York. The Knicks have as good a chance as anyone to knock of the Heat, but they rely so heavily on the Three that most games are going to be blowouts in either victory or defeat.

Indiana over Orlando. Orlando doesn't have much of a chance without Dwight Howard against a very deep Indiana team despite their lack of a go to guy.

Atlanta of Boston. Boston is really banged up right now, and lack the depth to really challenge the Hawks in this series.

In the West:

San Antonio over Utah. Utah is going to have to get monster performances from Al Jefferson to have a chance at knocking off San Antonio. Last season Memphis exposed their interior with Zach Randolph, does Jefferson have that big game potential?

Dallas over Oklahoma City. Yes this is a big stretch taking Dallas over OKC, however the Mavericks actually match up well with Kevin Durant and company. Dallas is needing monster performances from Dirk Nowitzki, but over the last decade when have they not? Just another day at the office for Dirk pulling off a second round birth a long hard fought series is my guess.

Lakers over Denver. Denver has a good match up with the Lakers, but it is too hard to count out the black mamba Kobe Bryant. If Andrew Bynum can continue to own the paint the Lakers will be very tough to beat.

Memphis over Clippers. Memphis will over power this defensively challenged Clippers team. The Clippers will struggle in the 4th quarter without a legitimate go to guy other than Chris Paul. Blake Griffin isn't capable of being counted on down the stretch because of horrific free throw shooting and a lack of offensive versatility.

Don't Bury Joe Nathan yet

Sports fans have embraced the what have you done for me lately attitude, giving no one a chance to have a rough patch or a bad outing. As soon as anything goes wrong they are calling for a player to be added to the starting line up, pitching rotation, to be the new closer, etc. This is also referred to as backup quarterback syndrome, and no saying is more true than the grass is always greener on the other side.

People are already calling for Rangers closer Joe Nathans head. Ready to replace him with set up men, Mike Adams or Alexi Ogando. Adams, and Ogando have both converted saves on off days for Nathan and that has furthered the cries for him to be replaced. The Rangers already feature a strong bullpen with Nathan at closer, Adams and Ogando as setup men, Uehara and Lowe as middle men, rookie Robbie Ross as the lone left hander, and Scott Feldman at long man.

Nathan has a proven track record as a closer which gives Nathan the edge over guys who have had success but never as a closer in Adams and Ogando. He has saved 263 games in his career and has done it for playoff teams in Minnesota in the past. He's comfortable in that role and the Ranger bullpen is strongest right now with him in that role. Ron Washington might have to continue to give Nathan days off until he is ready to close three days in a row on occasion. With the strength of the Rangers bullpen there isn't a problem giving Nathan the occasional day off. Ogando and Adams will be able to close on occasion when Nathan is not available with Uehara and Lowe setting up.

Two bad games don't define a season for a pitcher, and one "bad game" was a lone homerun. A common expression used in baseball is that this is the only sport where you can fail 7 times out of 10 and be considered great. This applies here to Joe Nathan, no he can fail 7 out of ten times when it comes to saving games, but he is going to have an occasional rough outing. No one is perfect, Joe Nathan is human and is going to have an occasional struggle, but now is not the time to give up on your closer when the season is only 8 games old.

Baseball is a long season, and it is tough to not overreact. Over the course of a 162 game season the Rangers seem more comfortable than not with handing the ball to Nathan in the 9th inning with a 3 run lead or less to protect.

Early Season look at the Texas Rangers

Possible Mavs Playoffs Scenario's

Ready to give up on Moreland?

It's hard to believe that Rangers fans are ready to throw Mitch Moreland Under the bus and look for another option. First of all this is going to be his second full season in the majors. Which is a little premature to give up on the young first-baseman. Last year we found out he was dealing with an injured wrist that limited his production and eventually led to offseason surgery. How can you not respect a guy for playing through the pain and playing his heart out to help his team win the American league pennant?

The Rangers front office seems to think that he is poised to have a breakout year, and at the very least a very solid season to help this franchise. Don't believe what they said? The proof shows from the front offices lack of attempt to sign Prince Fielder who clearly wanted to play baseball at The Ballpark in Arlington.

Not to mention the Rangers aren't dealing with Chris Davis anymore. Moreland doesn't strike out as much as Davis, and doesn't chase horrible pitches. Chris Davis was a better defensive player. Moreland is no slouch but first base ins't  a position where you play a lights out defensive player. Moreland is a patient batter who never gives in to a pitcher. Now that he is healthy and will be getting regular at bats against right handed pitchers we should see a very solid year out of Moreland.

The last thing to consider is that with the star studded Ranger line up they don't need Prince Fielder type production out of Moreland to continue to win. Sure that would be a huge bonus to add that presence to the line up, but Moreland is batting 9th on this team. So before jumping off the wagon remember his role on this team, and that he is a solid regular on any ball club. If he is good enough to start for a Juggernaut of an offensive team he would be playing for the other teams in the league as well. Patience, Moreland uses it at the plate. Try using it before giving up on the kid.

Texas Rangers Game 1 and 2

The Texas Rangers had everything line up perfectly in game 1 of the season. They got 6 innings out of starter Colby Lewis and were able to hand a lead to the lights out back end of the bullpen to preserve the lead. Alexi Ogando struck out the side in the 7th, Mike Adams in the 8th, and Closer Joe Nathan closed it out in the 9th inning for a 3-2 victory.

Game 2 the rangers got 6 innings from starter Derek Holland and brought the bullpen on with a 3-3 tie. Alexi Ogando pitch a scoreless seventh, Mike Adams a scoreless 8th, and Joe Nathan gave up the game winning homerun in the 9th.

Two games almost two identical scenario's but two completely different outcomes. First off don't crucify Joe Nathan yet. Closers always seem to pitch worse when they aren't protecting a lead. He should have held on to the tie, but not everyone is perfect. Nathan is throwing the ball well except for one fastball right down the middle.

The offense hasn't clicked yet. Everyone knows before it is all said and done that the Rangers will be scoring more than 3 runs per game. This isn't the Seattle Mariners line up. The Ranger sluggers just missed several pitches that normally would have gone for extra bases. World Series star Mike Napoli wasn't able to come through with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the bottom of the eight as we saw many times last year.

Only two games in it seems early to make judgements on this team but with the pitching, deep batting order, and the strong back end of the bullpen this team has a good shot to be right back in the World Series come October.

A Tale of Two Seasons

It seemed like Dallas was able to win almost every close game last season on their unbelievable run to become NBA champions. However this year things couldn't be more different. Last season it seemed as if every play down the stretch of a close game went the Mavericks way. The execution during crunch time was absolutely perfect.

This season they have played in 20 games decided by 5 points or less. In those games they have gone 9-11. The team is struggling to execute down the stretch mainly on the offensive end, but the defense isn't always spectacular. Tonight against the Grizzlies the Mavs had several bad turnovers towards the end of the 4th quarter, two by Nowitzki and one by West on the last possession really stand out. Not having Jason Kidd might have attributed to the struggles protecting the ball, but that doesn't excuse the other close losses where he was in the line up.

Nowitzki and Terry are two of the best 4th quarter scorers in the NBA and they are the reason why the Mavs are in so many close games. However when the defenses really tighten down on those two who is going to step up and become the very important third scorer that is desperately needed? This is where the loss of JJ Barea is really hurting Dallas. The Mavericks are hoping that the combination of Delonte West and Roddy Beaubois will be able to replace him.

Without a legitimate third option are the Mavs going to be able to compete in the playoffs? Are they even good enough to make the playoffs seems like a more realistic question. In addition to struggling on offense the Mavs have been getting terrorized inside. After Brendan Haywood steps out and the Mavs have to look to Mahinmi and Brandan Wright to provide back up center minutes and even leaning on Nowitzki in a limited role. They have trouble protecting the paint. The Zone defense with those guys playing center is going to have to be very effective.

With only a limited number of games left and playoff spot on the line is there really enough time for this Mavericks team to get straightened out and ready to compete and defend their championship? Because this is a veteran team as long as they get into the playoffs anything can happen, and with Nowitzki leading this team they shouldn't have trouble getting in to the playoffs. The struggle will be getting on a roll and being able to advance in the playoffs.

Jason Terry contract talk aggravating?

A lot of people are getting all hot and bothered by the JET's continuous contract talk. Yes, he said he would consider playing in Miami next year. He would consider playing anywhere. The guy wants to be a Maverick for life. He wants to retire here. He has repeatedly said that. Hearing him talk about playing for other teams isn't and shouldn't bother anyone.

Where and when fans should get upset is if he signs with a team like Miami for the mini mid-level exception contract that he would be able to sign in Dallas. If he stay with Dallas for the full mini mid-level exception he would make about 2.5 to 3 million dollars per year. If he leaves to go play for another team offering 8 mil or so per year why would you be upset with him for doing that? That's pretty much a no brainer. The first scenario is what would be riles up the Mavs faithful who have cheered Jason Terry through the ups and all of his downs.

He told us pictured above at the gas station a couple of months ago, the same thing he has repeatedly told the media. He wants to be back next year. He wants to retire here. That's his hope, but it's not entirely up to him. The Mavs are going to have to make it worth his while. Don't abandon the JET. The Mavs need to him to make the playoffs, and advance deep into them.

Time for Answers

Tonight most people in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex were expecting to see Lamar Odom suit up, for the Texas Legends in Frisco. The game was completely sold out. Instead Lamar Odom is going to suit up for the Mavericks against the Utah Jazz. After losing the 4th consecutive game and owning a depleted bench the Mavericks don't have anymore time to wait on Lamar Odom.

Rick Carlisle said patience was wearing thin, and it was time to find out if Lamar Odom was in or out as a member of this team. As Coach has said the stat sheet might not provide the answers everyone is looking for. He is going to be watching the effort of his Forward on the court. Also keep an eye on his body language. Having a player who is not entirely into the situation, it shows, as does having someone who is into it.

We will see how many minutes he plays tonight and if he gets to about 20 minutes or so we should get a good idea of how the rest of the season is going to go. With the Mavericks struggling to find an Identity and direction a fired up Lamar Odom would be a huge lift. Will there finally be answers for every Mavericks player, coach, management and fan who love this team? The Utah Jazz are going to get a front row seat to the either the end of this Lamar Odom saga, or the beginning of what could be a nasty divorce.

Renewed Importance of Roddy B

The Mavericks are in the middle of a stretch of 9 games in 12 days and with the age of most of the members of the Maverick back court Roddy Beaubouis has a new importance for this team. In the past it has always been about his potential stardom. How he was untouchable. We aren't here to debate whether or not he will live up to his potential, if he has hit his ceiling or if he is just an underachiever.

For the Mavericks and Roddy B the time to debate all those questions are in the offseason. Right now he is a vital member of the rotation. He has been seeing increased minutes after the all star break. With Delonte West out he is needed to pick up some of his minutes, but he also is picking up minutes to keep Jason Kidd, Vince Carter and Jason Terry fresh. Not to mention giving the Matrix a break from having to cover point guards every night. With Roddy's quickness he is able to guard the point guards and let Jason Kidd continue to guard 2s.

Defense is not the only the place he is providing relief. Over the last three games he has scored 11, 16, and 25 points. Helping with the scoring load is huge as well. Outside of Dirk Nowitzki and games at home for Jason Terry the offense has been brutal. Having him on the floor has helped a very stagnant offense that has been struggling mightily with scoring.

For Roddy B the future is now and he has been performing admirably over the past 3 games. He is going to be tested over the week or so with a ton of games, and likely a ton of minutes. Including a back to back to back at the end of the week. With the team struggling and fighting for a playoff spot, currently 7th in the west, there is a renewed importance on Roddy B's performance on the court.

Mavericks Roster: Championship Caliber?

Are the Mavs good enough to repeat? With a healthy Dirk Nowitzki the answer is emphatically yes. He proved last year that he is quite capable of carrying a team to a championship and elevating the level of play of his teammates. When healthy he is one of the best players in the NBA and the best clutch player in the game.

The problem is there might not be enough talent around him to keep him healthy. Rick Carlisle is doing his best to limit everyone's minutes to keep them fresh for the playoffs. After dropping three straight and sliding to 6th place in the west you begin to wonder if the team has what it takes to make it back to the finals. Dirk Nowitzki left the game vs Memphis early with a "tight back".

Part of the health issues may lie with the lack of supporting cast around him requiring Dirk to carry most of the load offensively. Another might be with the absence of Lamar Odom (personal reasons) and Delonte West (finger), or the ineffectiveness of Ian Mahinmi a player who showed a lot of promise early but has faded as the season progressed. Other players such as Brendan Haywood and Roddy Beaubois have been up and down with their performance. Haywood's production in the middle is key to the Mavs with the departure of Tyson Chandler. Haywood has always been capable with more than enough talent to be a productive big, but it doesn't always show. Brandan Wright and Yi Jianlian have been pleasant surprises off the bench but not big time performers, and Brian Cardinal provides his custodial duties.

Dallas does boast one of the NBA's best benches so the real problem may lie with key players Jason Kidd, Shawn Marion, Vince Carter, and 6th man Jason Terry. Vince Carter has been solid as the starting 2 guard. Shooting the three pointer very well and providing nice post game work on smaller guards. However, he tends to disappear in the second half of games at times. It might be conditioning or lack of playing time in the 4th quarter with Jet getting the bulk of those minutes.

Shawn Marion has been the man on the defensive end of the floor, but on the offensive end his offensive game is no where to be found far to often. He needs to produce offensively to provide some relief to Dirk and Jet down the stretch. His offensive in the post and his floaters are plenty effective to provide more offensive output.

Jason Kidd is under a strict minute cap that Rick Carlisle is monitoring very closely. However he has been a dreadful shooter for most of this season. Not to mention almost all of his shots come from behind the arc. He is going to need to become more of a threat in the post and driving to the hoop the rest of the year. He still provides his smarts and passing abilities night in and night out.

Jason Terry has had his struggles shooting on the road, but his scoring this year is his lowest PPG since he joined the Mavericks in 2004. He is still a clutch performer and one of the best the Mavericks have ever had, but teams are finding a way to defend him a lot better. He likes to spot up shoot, shoot off the dribble going right, and shoot floaters in the lane. It seems that he may need to add something to the offensive arsenal.

The Mavericks have enough talent, but a lot of things are going to have to go right for them to repeat as champions. A lot like last year when the team gelled at the right time. Without a healthy Dirk Nowitzki forget it; No player means more to his team.

Unrealistic Expectations of Lamar Odom

Coming to a franchise in Dallas fresh off their first NBA title and losing several fan favorites to free agency, lofty expectations were placed on Lamar Odom. Fans and Media wanted him to have the same impact Center Tyson Chandler had for Dallas last year. That wasn't fair to Lamar Odom, a very good player in his own right but he wasn't going to be playing a critical position for Dallas. He came to back up Dirk Nowitzki the face of the franchise. In all reality there are not that many minutes to play behind Nowitzki and Marion the two starting forwards.

With limited and spotty minutes coming his way Lamar Odom has had a tough time finding his grove on the floor. He originally struggled with his fitness, now it is his jump shot. He has also dealt with a lot of off the court issues regarding family members. He is in a fragile state that's why you hear nothing but encouragement from Rick Carlisle and the gang.

The real problem here is not with Lamar Odom. It is with over zealous inpatient fans who are not understanding the big picture. This team is able to be successful with out Lamar Odom at his best. Sure it would be nice to have him putting up 14 points 9 rebounds and 3 assists per game. However, when he's only playing 20 minutes per game he is doing a nice job as a reserve.

The best thing Dallas fans can do is look at the team as a whole instead of scrutinizing Lamar. He fills a role better than any of the previous suitors to the Nowitzki back up role. It is not an easy job to back up a superstar. Look around the league at the superstar players and look at the numbers of their back ups.

Lamar Odom is a good player off the bench. His most valuable asset is being able to play long enough to keep Nowitzki fresh and not being under contract for next year when the Mavs are expecting to be major players in free agency for the first time in a very long time. Don't expect 6th man of the year numbers from him; He's not getting 6th man of the year minutes.

2002-2003 Dallas Mavericks Playoff Run

Dirk should have won his first championship in 2003. This team was built perfectly for Don Nelson's style of play. The top players on this team were Dirk, Michael Finley, Steve Nash, and Nick Van Exel. Up until his injury Dirk was averaging 25 points and 11.5 rebounds in the playoffs, Finley averaged 18 points and 6 rebounds, Steve Nash averaged 16 points 7 assists, and Van Exel averaged 19 points 4 assists. The Big Three of Nash, Finley, and Nowitzki had been a force in past years but never enough to get over the hump. The addition of Van Exel at the trade deadline the year before really helped take some of the pressure off the stars. Van Exel was not afraid of the spotlight as he stepped up to knock down countless big shots for this team.

Other than Nowitzki, Van Exel was a huge difference maker for this team. At the end of games when the Mavericks could put the Big Three on the floor with Van Exel and Raef Lafrentz teams really had to respect the shot from everyone on the court. It was a luxury that no Mavericks team had before or after. Not to mention that four of those five players were at their best when the pressure was on. Any of the big three plus Van Exel were capable of carrying the Mavericks to a victory.

In addition to the stars playing extremely well led by Dirk, the role players on the team were extremely valuable. Walt Williams provided great shooting off the bench. Raef Lafrentz was able to stretch the floor at the Center position and give Dallas scoring that Shawn Bradley hadn't been able to provide in the past. Shawn Bradley blocked some shots and grabbed a few rebounds. Eduardo Najera was high energy and hustle off the bench. Adrian Griffin and Raja Bell provided solid perimeter defense.

Dallas lost Nowitzki in the 4th quarter of game 3 of the Western Conference Finals vs San Antonio to a knee injury and he would not play for the remainder of the series. They dropped game three and game 4 as they tried to adjust to life without Nowitzki. In game 5 with their backs against the wall Dallas was able to win 103-91 on the road.  Michael Finley led the team with 31 points and Van Exel had 21. The Mavericks had hope that the longer the series went on the better chance Nowitzki could make a return. Playing game 6 at home and hoping for a Nowitzki return in game 7 just wasn't enough as the Mavericks fell 90-78. Van Exel led the Mavericks with 19 points. Dallas also got 17 points from Walt Williams. San Antonio went on to win the championship vs New Jersey in 6 games.

This Mavericks team was so talented offensively, and was good enough defensively to beat anyone. They beat Portland in round 1, knocked off the Kings in the semifinals, and with a healthy Dirk Nowitzki they would have had enough to beat the Spurs and then New Jersey Nets. Overall I believe this was the best Mavericks team of all time.

Dal vs Phi halftime report

DAL 37 PHI 51

There isn't much to be said about the first half of this game. Dallas is getting out hustled, out rebounded and losing the turnover battle 7 to just one Philadelphia turnover.

Dirk and Marion had an awful first half combining for only 6 points on 3-18 shooting. Dominique Jones showed flashes with nice drives and finishes at the rim, but did turn the ball over three times.

Philadelphia's bench out played the Dallas bench getting 24 points including 12 points out of Vucevic. All Star Andre Iguodala had a solid all around half with 9 points 5 assists 3 steals.

Mavs Keys to the second half:
  • take care of the ball and limit turnovers.
  • more production out of their bench without Jason Terry and Delonte West.
  • limit hustle plays and Philadelphia fast break
  • use size to their advantage
  • more production out of Marion and Dirk

Ranking the Mavs

I wanted to the rank the Mavericks players 1-13 in terms of their importance to the success of the team.

1.Dirk Nowitzki
2.Jason Terry
3.Shawn Marion
4.Brendan Haywood
5. Jason Kidd
6. Lamar Odom
7.Vince Carter
8.Delonte West
9.Brandan Wright
10.Ian Mahinmi
11.Roddy Beaubois
12. Domonique Jones
13.Brian Cardinal

Dallas 96 Los Angeles 92

Dallas was able to hold on to victory number 18, their 4th win in a row, after multiple attempts to give the game away including the final seconds. With roughly 12 seconds remaining and up by 2 points Jason Kidd made an errant inbounds pass that was deflected then stolen by the Clippers. This led to a wide open three pointer by Caron Butler that just missed. With just two seconds remaining Delonte West was able to ice the game with two free throws.

During the fourth quarter Dallas sent Blake Griffin to the free throw line multiple times and he was unable to connect on most. He was 0-7 at one point and finished the game just 2-9 from the line. Dallas even fouled him away from the ball using the hack-a-shaq tactic on him. He was completely rattled.

The Clippers went just 3-9 from deep in the second half, struggling to find an offensive groove with Chris Paul not scoring much. Not to mention they got almost no production out of the 2 guard spot. Randy Foye was 0-7 from the field and finished with 3 points. He was left wide open on most possessions and unable to knock down the shot.

The Dallas bench outscored the Los Angeles bench 35 to 25. The Clippers also turned the ball over 21 times including several key turnovers with only a few minutes remaining. The Mavs only turned the ball over 11 times. Dallas was +6 on points in the paint and +12 on points off turnovers. Dirk led the Mavs with 22 points including 11 in the 4th quarter and Caron Butler led Clips with 23.

The Mavericks received some nice production out of Lamar Odom who seems to be turning the corner the last couple of games. It might not show up in the stat sheet but he has been aggressive and been making some excellent passes that aren't showing up as assists but getting teammates to the foul line.

Roddy Beaubois didn't  play for the third straight game. With Jason Kidd returning he has taken a seat at the end of the Mavericks bench struggling to find minutes with Delonte West and Jason Terry using the reserve minutes at both guard spots.

Mavs vs Clippers haltime report

Dallas leads the Clippers 55-47.

Dallas was able to beat up on the Lob Angeles Clippers on the inside, getting 10 points and 6 rebounds from Haywood and 8 points for Marion. Dirk was in early foul trouble and unable to log a lot of minutes. The Dallas bench continued to do what it does best and pick up the slack while Dirk was out. Dirk uncharacteristically missed three free throws including a technical free throw.

The Clippers did not get a ton of production out of CP3 in the first half. They were able to stay in the game by hitting 7 first half three pointers. Mo Williams and Caron Butler led the way for the Clippers. Reggie Evans got involved on the offensive end by making a couple of surprisingly nice passes for dunks, including an alley opp to Blake Griffin.

What to watch for in the second half:
What kind of production will we see from CP3 Chris Paul?
Can Dallas continue to use their size advantage on the interior? Brendan Haywood had a huge first quarter.

Will the 3 pointers for the Clippers fall? They rely heavily on the long ball on offense. They will need to hit from deep to win.

Vince Carter vs. Randy Foye. Foye will have to stop Carter on the block despite a heavy size disadvantage.
